Whether it be to better a career, move to a different industry, move to a new location, or to better your financial status we have all been there and will be there again most likely. But where do you start? How aggressive should I be? Where should I start looking? There are so many questions you can ask yourself that can eventually put off your job search before it is too late. I am a recruiter in the St. Louis IT job market and I have a few helpful tips after reading a very interesting article. Let me show you where to start.

First things first. Take control of your destiny and career. Do not think of yourself in the job market as a small pawn or as a person lost in a giant sea of supposed opportunities. Think of yourself as the "One Man (Or Woman) Show." You are your own company; you are the president, CEO, and Sales staff for this company. You will be selling yourself to a company. You need to make them believe that you are the greatest thing that could happen to their company. You are your own product and you need to sell it to someone. Think of yourself as a hot commodity that they can't live without. This will put you in a more aggressive and confident mind set.

Step two: Define yourself. You should make a list of all the great skills and qualities you could offer a potential employer. Truly take stock in your abilities and positive attributes. After the list define the ideal job you are looking for and that would make you happy. Try to be realistic here; don't list your dream job as a pitcher in the MLB or an astronaut. After doing this you will have a good idea of what jobs to look for and how you can make a case for potential employment in an interview.

Third step: Understand your industry's job market. This is a great way to understand what job will best suit you financially. learn the law of Supply and Demand for the reasons of knowing what jobs are hot right now. For example, don't go looking for jobs as a VCR repair man because the demand for one is non existent.

Step four: This might be the MOST IMPORTANT! do not mistake your time being unemployed as a time for vacations and sleeping in. So many people become lazy and too comfortable being unemployed which can often prolong their time being unemployed. Remember you are your own company! When your company shuts it's doors for business that means the company will go out of business. A full time job averages 40-50 hours a week. Finding a job is a full time job so make the hours count. I would always have a suite or business attire ready to wear in case a last minute interview or meeting pops up so you are prepared. Go get them, be flexible and ready to move fast.

Last Step! Network and plant seeds... EVERYWHERE. Part of finding a job is networking yourself appropriately. Get in touch with anyone and everyone. Get online and surf for jobs, Do not overlook anything. You can always turn down a job that is offered but you can not if you never try or find the jobs. This is up to you to get going and find the right opportunity.

Now your ready and prepared and can understand this is a process. Don't forget any steps and feel free to add your own. GOOD LUCK!

http://www.careerbuilder.com/Article/CB-1164-Interview-Tips-5-Ways-to-Get-the-Job-You-Want-in-Any-Economy/

Joe Catalano
RELAY|technology

What TabletPC to Choose From: iPad, Blackberry, Android?

The time has finally come when I have found myself looking to splurge and spend money on something I really don't need. I think it is time to buy a TabletPC. I have heard from so many people that they are by far one of the coolest toys around right now and are continuously becoming a little cheaper by the day. But still the bigger question looms; What TabletPC should I buy? To be honest I do not know the first thing about the technology or the differences between the big players in the market such as; iPad, iPad2, Kindle, Android, Blackberry and I'm sure I have left a few out, Sorry! Someone please tell me what the difference is and which one to buy.

Of course since the dawn of the iSeries there has been a gravitational pull towards any projects as they have slowly become a status symbol to many of us. Please take no offence to this; I can't afford one. The iPad and iPad2 have really pushed the craze forward and in my opinion set a bar for others. Apple's marketing is second to none with this technology and they have proven to soar with the hype behind this product line. But what is the big deal? Isn't this a large iPod or a smaller Mac Laptop? Don't get me wrong, I think it is much more convenient to tote this around instead of a large laptop. This brings fantasy football to a new level! But is it necessary and my biggest concern may be that I don't think I would ever use it to its full potential. I don't want an iPad that all I use it for is facebook, Google, e-mail and fantasy football. That would be a waste of money on my part as a consumer. But wait, there is a cheaper alternative!

The other companies out there right now making all none Apple tablets are pushing the edge of the envelope to appeal to consumers. With more functionality and choices it has become a consumer's market again. Now with different sizes and functions there is not just one thing to choose form. But still, what am I going to use this for? Can I justify spending $200, $300 or more on this? Sure it is less than the iPad's but still alot of money for a mini-computer. I wonder what type of hidden costs are involved that I am not even aware of yet! Insurance, web services, who knows what else I will be charged for?

Someone please help. I want to buy one of these and I have heard great things. The only trouble is I don't know what I am buying or what I should buy. Please offer any insight you can. I am thinking about a Kindle Fire, Blackberry, Vizio, iPad2, or the newer HP's.

Cheers,

Joe Catalano
RELAY|technology

For all you IT professionals we are a staffing firm. This is a new social media driving many users who have a Gmail account to use this version of social media. There are many different features as well as similar features to those competitors in the industry. I guess the best question is which one should I use? I'm afraid there is no good answer for that question as it is an opinion. However, I can give you my opinion.

I have been trying to get in to the Google+ social media now for about two months or so. When I first heard about the idea I was very excited to see what types of new and different ideas the geniuses at Google were going to come up with. Looking at some of the leaps they have made over time I considered my excitement and anticipation a sure thing. Unfortunately I was less than blown away when I fort used Google+. I was really expecting more people to be on there. I was expecting more innovation. I was expecting to be blown away and use the over achievements of Google let me cast Facebook aside and continue to be distracted by something new. Google+ in my opinion fell short. The actual set up is neither too visually pleasing nor very user friendly.

I think it is safe to say that Facebook has won this battle of the social medias. The war may be far from over however the battles have slowed down just in time for Facebook to release many new features to possibly attract more users or keep the ones they have.

In releasing these new features I think it is clear that Facebook was a little uneasy with Google's release of Google+. Why else make such an attempt to upgrade so much at one time? I would have done the same if I were lucky enough to be a decision maker at Facebook. All the fighting aside the new features are very cool. Just to ramble off my favorite is the way you will be able to tune into a friends radio station or watch their video as they are streaming it at the same time.

I do not do the explanation justice. But I think by now it should be clear that Google+ although had the momentum to topple Facebook; it has fallen short so far.

Interviewing Tips

Good day to all! Recently I have been blogging here about interesting articles related to IT and usually some connection to open source technology. I thought we here at Relay|technology could offer some great insight to the mad world of interviewing. We are a staffing firm and knowing interviews and being able to coach people through interviews are just a couple services we can provide to our candidates and clients. Below are the top interviewing tips along with a link to an article to elaborate on them. Please enjoy and if you need any help or advise let us know!

Top Interviewing Tips:

1) Practice: Practice makes perfect, everyone knows that, at why should an interview process be any different. Set aside time to practice in the mirror, with a partner, or whatever will best prepare you in your mind because when you feel most ready to interview; you will do your best.

2) Prepare: To best prepare yourself make sure you leave enough time to review all materials that pertain to the interview. Look over and know every inch of your resume, the job description, details on the company and also the people you are interviewing with. This will bring you confidence, and knowledge that will show through in a interview.

3) Get Ready: Make sure you have everything in order before your interview. Often times it is a good idea to lay out everything you will need the night before; suite, resumes, briefcase, portfolio, etc.. Make a checklist to walk down to ensure you are best prepared as possible. DO NOT be running around the day of trying to pick up dry cleaning or printing resumes or anything else for that matter. The last thing you want to be on the day of an interview is rushed!

4) Be On Time: It still amazes me how many people are late to interviews. This is one of the most unprofessional things to do in an interview. Sometimes it is not a bad is a to drive to the interview location a day or two before to make sure you know how to get there. There is nothing wrong with getting to an interview 5-10 minutes early or even drive around the block a couple times to go over your resume again. The last thing you should be in an interview is LATE!

5) Calm Down: It is much easier said than done, I understand. But remember that the reason why you prepared so much is why you should be calm. Try to make the interview a conversation between two professionals not an interrogation. Take a deep breath and keep eye contact. Make sure you listen to the questions asked to you and try to answer them as fully as you can. Lastly, don't be afraid to take a quick second to think about your answer before talking. It is not so bad to take 5 to 10 seconds to think of a great answer as opposed to blurting out a bad one.

7) Show What You Know: A good reason why you should you do so much research on the company and role your interviewing for is to reference that during an interview. This shows what you know about the company and role you're interview shows professionalism and that you care enough to look into it before coming. This could play out very well for you in the end of the process.

8) Follow Up: No matter if it is your first interview, your last or even just got done excepting an offer; you should always follow up via e-mail, letter, or some thank you note. Show the company you are going the extra mile and act in a professional manner. The thank you note could be the one thing that sets you apart from another interviewer. Or the note could be the tiny reminder to the manager or whom ever was interviewing you that you're the person for the job.

Please take what you can from the information above and do your best! The best tip I can give anyone is to be yourself. you will find the right job for you.

For more information go to the following link:
http://jobsearch.about.com/cs/interviews/a/jobinterviewtip.htm

Joe Catalano
RELAY|technology

Hackers to Destroy Facebook!

Today I read an article and watched a YouTube video form the group who is telling all that they will destroy Facebook on November 5th 2011. I really don't know what to call it other than strange. A group's hatred towards a social media is a little absurd and unneeded. The claim that Facebook is holding all this very private information and will always keep it or even sell it to a government agency even after your profile and account is deleted is not a reason to "destroy." The beauty about social media is the user's free will to choose. No one has ever been forced to create a Facebook account. No one puts a gun to your head or threatens your life to set up an account. If you are willing to have your private information on their network then you are responsible to understand what that could mean for your information in the future.

If any social media is selling information to different governments I do agree that it is a problem that should be solved. However, If you are not doing anything that would be considered bad or illegal then who cares? I would find it hard to believe that someone or some agency could steal my identity with one of my old pictures from college. I doubt any foreign country looking to harm me or the country I live in would find my interest in technology, my favorite music, my favorite foods, or where I graduated from college useful in any way.

Overall, if you have not seen the video or read up on any newscasts or articles on this please do. If the group making threats towards Facebook or any other social media sees how many people think this is ridiculous then maybe we can put all this nonsense behind us. On a side note, I think it would be really funny if there was a group on Facebook that liked the "Hacktivist" group making threats.

http://www.businessinsider.com/anonymous-facebook-2011-8

Cloud Architechts: Supply VS Demand

The link below is to a great article that touches a few different topics that are great for all you cloud enthusiasts, professionals, students, and unemployed geniuses! There is a rise everyday in the amount of companies switching to a cloud based infrastructure. This is a big decision but by all means a necessary one. Besides technically better for most companies the Cloud is a more attractive route for these companies to take. The marketing scheme for Cloud Computing is fantastic. Hosting companies have been on the rise since the technology came out because it is the "Sexy" new product for IT. But companies beware, this may be a giant failure if not done right the first time around.

Due to the rise of demand for Clouds and the architects to design them, there may be a decrease in the level of skill going into the design. A "bad" Cloud being built could result in a catastrophic disaster for a company. Most companies usually have an infrastructure base equal to the amount of business it does. Therefore, the bigger the company the more money it could lose from a bad Cloud. Many companies are not hiring the best Cloud Architects because they don't know what to look for. As a recruiter myself I must take a moment to say that this is why recruiting firms like RELAY|technology are so useful. Let us be the ones to determine if they can do the job properly and then an employer can screen for if they are a fit for the company.

In the article the author mentions 3 different solutions which are great in my opinion. One; steal the talent from other companies or even top competitors. Two; build the team to design, implement and teach the Cloud technology all at the same time (I'm not as big of a fan for this one as I feel it could waste time and money which a company doesn't usually want to do). Third; rent out your Cloud to a hosting company. I think any company could benefit from this as these hosting companies around the US are becoming more and more sophisticated. One company in particular, Contegix, is doing amazing work for its clients and the development and building of its opensource technology. Contegix is an amazing hosting environment utilizing all the most cutting edge technology in the opensource community.

All companies beware of building a bad Cloud. The process is detrimental to success and if not carefully executed it could lead to a massive failure for your company. Do the right thing; pay the high dollar to someone who knows what they are doing, or a company who can provide it for you.

Thank you for reading.

The article:
http://www.infoworld.com/d/cloud-computing/why-the-shortage-cloud-architects-will-lead-bad-clouds-167674-0

Joseph V. Now this is still called a rumor but can anyone deny you saw this coming? The deal makes sense on too many levels to ignore. As AT&T/Verizon ask for government bailout Sprint still holds a large portion of the cellular phone consumer market. Sprint has released over time a good number of android based smart phones and continues to come out with newer features, better cameras, larger screens, ect. This dynamic of options speaks to a consumer and what better option to have in your arsenal than the beloved iPhone.

Over time the iPhone has been marketed more uniquely than any other cell phone in history. The catchy and visually pleasing commercials backed by a tune that make you tap your feet. The Smartphone has set a standard for those to come. It has become a status symbol among many across the world. I think it would be a great deal for sprint and Apple both. There have been so many people over the years that have left Sprint only because they want an iPhone. With an iPhone available Sprint could retain much more consumers and maybe even welcome back more with their competitive prices and plans.

For a company like AT&T this could be a major setback in the future development of the company while it takes one of the biggest bargaining chips they hold. After the purchase of T-Mobile from Deutsche Telekom AT&T could use the iPhone in their corner to continue a steady revenue stream. Let's be real, this is a big deal to Sprint and AT&T both.

From my perspective I am very interested in seeing what kind of complications Apple has with testing iPhones for Sprint. If done correctly this could change the cellular provider market for good. Don't let me tell you what is what, read it for yourself. Please provide me with feedback. We are all just spectators in this with great opinions. What's yours?

http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Mobile-and-Wireless/Apple-iPhone-4S-Coming-to-Sprint-Rumors-332135/?kc=EWKNLWMU06162011STR5

FOLLOW THIS BLOG!

Joe Catalano
jcatalano@relaytechnology.com

GOOGLE's "Tap-to-Pay"

CASH, CREDIT OR GOOGLE?

Google has launched the trial of the new “Tap-to-Pay” feature that it is very unique and brings a new approach to online payments. Still only in the trial period this is very cool and borderline un-needed. The feature is meant to be able to hold payment transactions between customers and retailers over the Smartphone. Don’t get me wrong, I like a worthless application as much as the next person. However, I do not see the big picture idea in this product. Why is it so important to be able to pay from your smart phone? Have we really gotten so fed up with signing receipts and paying with cash that we as consumers feel comfortable only tapping our own personal device to pay for a good? I think the two words that come to mind with that idea are creative and lazy. Although this new “Tap-to-Pay” feature may be creative, it may also be proven to be worthless.

On the other hand, when looking at this feature from a pure technology perspective I this is genius. Looking at the scalability, the transaction, the touch screen, the security, and the idea it’s self it is completely genius. I would be very interested to hear about the challenges they are faced when testing the feature. It is very inspiring to think that you could be anywhere buying anything and able to purchase it through a single tap on your Smartphone.

Please tell me what you think about this new payment system. I am very eager to hear another person’s perspective on this breakthrough.

http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D9NF96EG1.htm

Joe Catalano

RELAY|technology

Apple iCloud To Bring In A Storm

On June 6th 2011 Apple is to release to the world the new Apple iCloud. Unlike most of their more popular products this is no phone. We have all seen the commercials for the new cloud computers able to link up to everything in your home and surroundings. It is not surprising that Apple would make their own rendition. on May 31st is the kick off at the WWDC where Apple and Steve Jobs is showing off the new toys and products to be released. The iCloud is joined by new software, new phone, new pad and their latest OS. Apple showcases these over 100 product demos and hopes to make a big splash with the new products.

Can Apple really expect to compete with all these new products. Sharing a tenth of the PC market I don't know if they should be focusing on the iCloud. Don't get me wrong, I am a sucker for a flashy, catchy commercial for any iProduct but why must Apple offer the cloud services? They have created a newer classed society separated by phones. Sure, smart phones are essential and their popularity has reached new heights so many people have Internet capable phones. However, an individual really sets a standard by carrying an iPhone. Phones and Music re-vamped the company in my opinion. So shouldn't they stick to what they know best?

On the flip side, it is inconceivable to think that Apple will not compete on every level of the Computer, Software, Phone, Music and who knows whatever other industry. Cloud computing is an essential stepping stone in the progression of IT. I hope soon there will be a cloud computing phone and for all I know there already is. So is Apple is to continue breaking barriers in every field they must unveil a cloud. But a different cloud; an iCloud.

As someone not versed in iProducts please give me your thoughts about the new toys. Tell me what you think and how your opinion lines up with either side if the argument. Or even if you have your own.

Thanks for reading,

Joe Catalano
RELAY|technology

Linux: Red Hat Version 6

After reading the article linked below I am excited. The annual Linux Summit has started with the new news that Red Hat Version 6 will be making it's debut soon. The first Beta has been made and released with a select few able to use it after this week. This raises so many questions of, what will they think of next? The coolest aspect of open source technology has to be that it is ever changing with the world developing it as time goes on. They have shown much dismay and aggression for Samsung who they accuse of "ripping off" ideas from patents, trademarks, and trade dress registrations. Very odd to me that the South Korean based Smasung would take this lightly as they sell some integral pieces of top selling apple products like the iPhone and iPad. Moreover, Where is google in all of this? The have managed to keep their noses clean and out of Apple's black book while working with a number of the companies that Apple has sued in the past for similar reasons.
Check out the rest of the story here:
http://www.itnews.com/smartphones/31383/analysis-apple-v-samsung-suit-sidesteps-google

Read My Blog!

Joe Catalano
Relay Technology

Riot Games: Work Harder, Play Harder!

Riot Games has been featured recently in The St. Louis Business Journal in regards to expansion, growth, potential and becoming a core player in the gaming industry. The LA based company has opened an office in the St. Louis, MO area and added 10 new employees under Scalability Architect Scott Delap. The plan is to hire an additional 20 more this year alone! The move to St. Louis is welcomed by the area IT talent as Riot Games spokesman Chris Heintz said, "St. Louis has tech talent and plenty of engineers. We certainly want to grow the game scene here." The St. Louis office will be a great addition to the already 200 employees and 120 to come.

The most impressive portion of the article was the time lines that Riot Games has grown into the one of the world's most valuable start ups. Founded in 2006 and already valued at $250 million with an estimated revenue of $50 million. These projections are only predicted to grow with Chinese powerhouse Tencent, a $50 billion company, becoming the majority investor in a deal said to be worth more than $350 million. With the pipeline into the Chinese market there is nothing stopping Riot Games from continuous growth in a ever growing market!

Congrats Riot Games; we all look forward to seeing your continued success!

Follow my Blog!

Joe Catalano
RELAY|technology

Gosling Going Google!

That's right! James Gosling, best known for creating the programming language Java, has accepted an offer to work with Google. One might say "So What!" or "Who Cares?" but this is a pretty big deal. Creating a programming language is not and every day, month or year occurrence. Any true IT'er should know and realize the reach and the flexibility "Java" goes into many areas of IT. Some of the most common companies, and games and phones are all ran on a Java platform.

Now the man that brought Java to the world will be working for the company that brings so many new things to the world every day. I ask; what is next? What on earth could they, Google, be working on that needed James Gosling's attention? Better yet, what are they working on that grabs James Gosling's attention?

I am very excited to see the new and innovative things that the teaming of Gosling and Google will bring to the industry. Good luck Java Man!

Check out more details at the article listed below:

http://www.linuxinsider.com/story/What-Gosling-Could-Do-for-Google---and-Vice-Versa-72181.html

Follow My Blog!

Joe Catalano
RELAY|technology

Google moves into Kansas City!

One of the most recognizable names in not only the US but the world is opening up a new location in the mid-west. Today I heard the good news that Google will be opening a broadband office in the Kansas City area. I had heard speculation in the past of a new office opening in the state of Missouri or Kansas but I never saw any concrete evidence until now. For a mid-westerner, like myself, this is great news! This opening could not only boost the job market; but also promote very talented and IT focused individuals to settle down in this area. Many have heard that Google's application process is anything but easy; it is not, trust me! Some have said the process involves an IQ test, background test, drug test, and I'm sure I have left a few. There is nothing wrong with that! Google is one of the coolest places to work int he world. IT bring's new meaning and taste to the ".Com" environment. But hopefully with this new office opening the mid-west will continue to grow as a hub for big business in IT. Check out more about the new Google office at the link below!

http://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/news/2011/03/30/full-coverage-google-picks-kansas.html

GO GOOGLE!

Joe Catalano
RELAY|technology

iPhone 5 Rumors, Maybe Coming in Summer 2011?

The iPhone/ lifeline have the world in frenzy while continuously revamping itself to appeal to a hungry consumer. Not long after the iPhone 4 made its debut the new iPhone 5 is leaking rumors little and big. The link below will take you to an article with some teasers for what is to come with the eventual release of the new version. Whether it is a new and improved camera or more sensitive touch screen the iPhone will always strike the eye of any consume as it has evolved from a status symbol to not only a smart phone, iPhone has become "the" smart phone. The status symbol effect is still taking place however it who has the newest iPhone that is considered the "elite." I personally disagree with Apple's processes of stringing along a consumer with small updates to an accessory but it is making them millions. Though it may be morally displeasing to me; I cannot argue with the numbers they put up.

Some of the new iPhone 5 features leaked to the public; some of which are pretty ideal. The larger screen could make it appeal to a newer demographic of older consumers. The slide-to-text could make it more versatile to a younger texting market. I know I can not stand trying to work a touch screen effectively and often times look like a monkey trying to crack a coconut. Getting back to a previous point of status symbols, the new iPhone is being showcased in not black, not white, but metal. The pictures of the metal casing make it look cutting edge and classy at the same time. Hopefully the metal casing will make it more durable to drops and other issues that relate to the iPhone breaking.

Only time will tell to see what new features Apple gives to the already acclaimed and cutting edge iPhone 5. For now check out the link below to see pictures of what the soon to come iPhone 5 will look like.

http://inventorspot.com/articles/iphone_5_larger_screen_metal_back_and_it_aint_coming_june

Follow this blog!

~Joe Catalano
RELAY|technology

New 64G Apple iPhpne, Lost and Found

This story is hilarious. Recently, March 18th, a 27 year old software engineer from Apple was getting off work and decided to venture to a nearby bar for an after work drink. When stopping in the the bar scene this software engineer misplaced what could have been one of the most important items he has ever been in possession of. He left the unveiled 63Gig iPhone sitting at the bar! This prototype had not leaked out to the market or was really even a topic of discussion in the IT news. I never thought I would say "what a good time to lose your keys, wallet or car;" but WOW! I would rather lose anything I own rather than misplace this unseen prototype that he might not even have permission to bring outside of the building.

This really is one of the funniest stories and a worst nightmare. The other half of the population is camping out in front of stores and losing sleep over how to get a new one. What is really different about this new edition in comparison to the older version? Is a couple new bells and whistles really a justification for raising the prices? you would think in stead of adding a flash to the camera or adding memory the Apple engineers would come up with an I iPad made of all recycled materials or one that does not cost as much due to the economy crisis. But as long as citizens of every country will camp-out and drop their jaws over the hip and the new Apple has every right to price the product at any price they wish. Obviously the are not over pricing it or they would not sell as many. The link below is a pretty good review of the new iPad. It takes more of a "face value" approach to dissect the new attributed and tweaks that have made everyone and their boss check out the new iPad 2.

http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/laptops-portable-pcs/tablets/apple-ipad-2-935199/review

Is Savvis For Sale?

I found this news article on a common social media blurb. Those of you know what and who Savvis is mat be shocked at this rumor. This could mean many lay-offs or a surge of job openings. Either way take a look at the article and tell me what you think. I think this is just rumor and speculation. Many times when news like this hits in only a few places in the web-world it loses all credibility. I think this is a hoax but still very interesting.

http://www.pehub.com/97680/is-savvis-finally-up-for-sale-tech-co-said-to-have-hired-qatalyst/

IT Job Hunters!!

I know it can be very disappointing to many people searching for the right job in the IT Field. WHY?

Today I read an article from CNN about Facebook asking for even more of our personal information. They have started asking for peoples addresses and phone numbers. I can't imagine why on earth they would need more than our intimate photos, relationship status, personal thoughts, interests and everyone you consider a friend enough to stalk when you have nothing better to do. This being said Facebook was very serious wanting to know every one's information until the news leaked out and bloggers up roared in an outrage and then "It" hit the fan!

Facebook has told the press they are interested in getting this information to use it for all the online shopping and advertisement reasons. Also saying that it could be a useful tool for some of their applications such as Farmville. Personally I think this is a little crazy. I don't know if I would feel comfortable lending out that information out to anyone let alone one of the biggest social networks in the world.

Read a great article on this by following the link below.
http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/social.media/01/18/facebook.phone.privacy/index.html?iphonefb

Joseph V. I have been looking for a good SQL user group for a long time. I am part of some on Linkedin.com and other various ones around the Internet but this one is great. I know many companies are pushing to advance their structure in house. Many people who call themselves "Pro's" in SQL have not yet grasped SQL 2008. This group is a great way for those who are on the outside looking in to get well acquainted with a technology they might not always get dirty with. This is also a great way for those who are already in production with SQL 2008 to teach and mentor us "Newbies" on the proper protocol and procedures. I think this Sql 2008 user group is is one of the better maintained on the Internet. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. From the Blackberry to the iPhone and now making a splash, Windows. It is a new world with the smartphone not only knocking on big business' door but rather kicking the door in with a squad of new accessories. So many large companies are turning to making smartphones mandatory for all employees. But where does it stop? What about the older generation that wants nothing to do with a touch screen? I am not saying that it is great for technology to help advance the company into new lime light; but is it really that important to see an e-mail while getting an afternoon snack? I think it is ridiculous to go to a kids soccer game and watch all the parents checking the Internet for weekend e-mails. In my opinion there is a time and a place for budding technology.

Then again, where would the line be drawn? Who am I to say it is not helpful for those men and women who prefer to work 24/7 to have access to their e-mail, Internet, etc.. Atleast now that parent can make it to the soccer game with a smartphone in hand. The advancement of technology in the past 50 years has skyrocketed past the development of the 100 years before it. should we not be careful that we don't grow too fast or too much? I guess not.

The article below is a pretty cool statement about how bigger companies are increasing the use of smartphones for their employees. It is very cool that just like it is still cool to get on with a company and get an expense account, a company car or even a company computer, like the one I'm typing on right now; to get a company phone. and no longer will we be limited to a certain number of character to fit in a text. But now we can access whatever we want whenever we want! Welcome to the future; a changed landscape of how busness is lived.

<"This was NOT sent from my iphone">

http://www.infoworld.com/d/mobilize/smartphones-in-the-enterprise-changing-landscape-479

Joe Catalano
RELAY|technology

Open Source Video Games

It is a wonder why there are not more open source video games available. When thinking about the practicality of using open source technology; it just makes sense. From a financial outlook, why would a producer want to use a product that would be outrageously more costly than a similar open source product? But maybe it would be wise to not make many video games open source. What would be the point of giving a technologically advanced person the availability to change a game that so many people worked so hard to make it what it is. The argument is that it you feel the need to change a game then why buy it in the first place?

In my personal opinion I think it would be cool to see what people can do with an open source video game. The world could see firsthand what some of our most gifted and creative people can do with a little help. However I think that there needs to be a line drawn that some games can be open source but others should not. For example, I don't think it would be fair to others in a game like "Call of Duty." When playing in the online/ multi-player setting it would not be fair for one person to change his settings for his advantage when the other players would not get the same options. On the other hand; it would be appropriate to change the game in a 1 player game.

These are my two cents. Microsoft, being a household name, is recognized to even the no tech savvy person. Most open source technologies are only studied by people who have a genuine interest in getting hands on. I feel that until Linux, and other open source technologies, breaks into the everyday life of non-technical people; it will just stay under the radar. But bringing it to a church setting and showing the abilities to save money on a large scale is a great idea. If everyone brought open source technology to their religious institute the word of mouth could sky-rocket many sources into popularity, make local/national news, news papers, and of course the Internet. Follow the link to a cool and new interesting way to save a church some money.

http://blog.eracc.com/2010/12/08/linux-tux-goes-to-church/

If you are in IT and looking for a new and interesting job let me help. The biggest question I have is does it matter? there are so many new opportunities in Linux that I am not sure if it will make too many ripples in the IT pond. At the same time the Fedora project, sponsored by Linux is a great tool to bring together the IT community and combine innovative ideas and thinking.
Not to worry for too long. Just as technology is evolving everyday so is Fedora and Linux. Those of you who rely on Fedora 12 can download Fedora 13, 14 or 15(soon). I say the closing door of Fedora 12 only opens with 15 so be ready and make a difference because that is what the open source community brings to the table; Open, Honest, and Collaborated Thinking.

To read more go to http://news.softpedia.com/news/Goodbye-Fedora-12-170841.shtml .

Joseph V. The short cartoon touches base with the topic that Android Apps can change, evolve, and shape to your personal liking. Don't get me wrong; there are MANY great aspects of Apple products. iTunes, iPod, iPad, iPhone and all the other gizmos and gadgets are at the cutting edge of technology. The new evolution of these products will shoot our generation well beyond what most of us thought possible. However, I feel the opportunity that follows the development of Android products is much greener on all sides. Much like open source technologies, the Android point of view is ever-changing, ever-challenging, and ever-ours! Link open source products before Android, it is the passionate people behind the product that push the envelope of what is possible. Together these bright minded and future focused "techies" can reach new heights with a collaboration of ideas from friends from all around. We may not speak the same language or believe in the same ideals or morals. But together a common interest to better the new technologies that touch our lives everyday, We believe in Android. Now laugh at the funny comic relief!

http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/09/16/comic-the-difference-between-android-and-iphone-this-pretty-much-sums-it-up/

Joe Catalalno
RELAY|technology
http://www.relaytechnology.com/
jcatalano@relaytechnology.com

A Star is Born

Looks like LG is raising the bar with the new 'Star' Android device. Next thing you know we will have laptops strapped to our belts... or worse need a murse to carry our phone. If you don't know what a murse is, then good for you it's best that way.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/16/exclusive-lgs-4-inch-android-phone-with-dual-core-tegra-2-and/

Kinectman2: Possible Open Source Kinect Driver

I recently posted about Adafriut's $3000 bounty for an open source kinect driver to compete with Microsoft's new addition to Xbox360, Kinect. It really is something new, fresh and cool. From this point forward the evolution of gaming will sprout out of controllers and into a free movement. Even for someone who is not the biggest gamer in the world; or even someone who doesn't understand the internal complications of the make up, I still think Kinect is too cool for school.

New info has surfaced about the possible open source version of kinect. The newer and maybe cheaper version is so originally named "Kinectman2". If you follow the link to the article you can view the demonstrations on youtube. Some are calling this hacking but Microsoft has not said a peep about hacking. I don't think they want their name associated with the negative connotation of the word "hacking." Either way, Kinect and or Kinectman2 is a break through, I can not wait to see where it goes from here.

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/kinect-open-source-drivers-coming-on-nicely/10275

Follow us here at our Blog, on Twitter (relaytechnology), and on Facebook.
You can find me, Joe Catalano, on Linkedin; Facebook, & Twitter.

RELAY|technology
Joe Catalano

Open Kinect Blog

It is very interesting to see the open source wave of creativity making hedge way in even the Microsoft world. Below is a link to a great article about a $1000 bounty for a kinect driver. There is so many new cut-throat advancements hitting the gaming market every year. Each year it seems that there is a newer, faster, better, more memory driven advertisement for the hottest new system. Who knows maybe we as IT'ers are just on the bleeding edge of creation. Who knows what will become of this. But I hope if the Kinect driver is created and open to consumers it will look like the photo at the top of the article. Check it out...

http://www.crunchgear.com/2010/11/04/1000-bounty-offered-for-open-source-kinect-driver/

RELAY|technology
Follow our blog or follow us on twitter/Facebook

Just the right size?
